January | Event: Castle in the Snow

Castle in the Snow OOC Plotting
Minimize
As winter rolls through Tokyo, some may find themselves longing for a little snowfall. While it certainly gets cold, there's very little snow in Tokyo proper, with the storm of last year having been something of a fluke.

But as it turns out, those looking for a little snow will get their wish, as the NRL announces an opportunity for refugees interested in traveling to visit the northern region of Hokkaido for a weeklong getaway.

A City Encased in Ice

Visiting Hokkaido is something of an undertaking. Well beyond the stretch of Kanto's flooded valleys and city ruins, the only realistic way to visit Hokkaido is by train. And once there, navigating it makes the train something of a requirement. This is because Hokkaido is home to a unique phenomenon known as the Everfrost, a frigid storm that perpetually blankets the region in snow and ice, no matter the season.

Following a lengthy train ride, the train enters a tunnel that sends it underground, before finally emerging into a station seemingly carved out of dark blue ice crystals. And yet the refugees won't feel a chill, as the unique properties of ice formed by the Everfrost prevents it from melting, even with the heat on. From there, it'll just be quick transfer, and they'll arrive in the Minami Ward of the city of Sapporo.

Earn Your Keep Minami, Sapporo
The refugees will be staying in Sapporo's famous Ice Princess Hotel, a luxury resort made entirely of Everfrost ice and located in the shadows of a massive castle. Ordinarily, the rooms here would be too expensive for even the wealthiest refugee. But seeing as this is the off-season (no one wants to visit a perpetual winter wonderland in the winter, obviously), they've arranged special accommodations that even the NRL can afford! The rooms are nothing grand, arranged in a suite style with multiple bedrooms connecting to a shared living area. And of course, while the rooms are still rather warm, the walls themselves are made of thick Everfrost, which is just as cold to the touch as ice ought to be. Make sure not to lean against it after a shower.

Unfortunately, these accommodations require each guest to work a minimum of one work shift at the resort. While it's not impossible to argue one's way out of working, seeing as they were not informed of this part of the deal, those willing to grin and bear it will find that the work available really isn't that bad. There's ordinary jobs, such as cleaning, managing the front desk, or helping out in the bar or kitchen. But most of them will be given opportunities to learn more about Hokkaido's Everfrost up close.

Those who can handle the cold will be invited to a workshop behind the resort where the Everfrost is processed into workable materials. Harvested from the eye of the storm in the center of Sapporo, these icy blocks are carved into shapes and then polished until they shine a brilliant blue. Walls, frames for furniture and decor, glasses and even plates used for cold desserts are all common uses for Everfrost. The ice is plentiful and can easily be frozen back together again, so there's no need to worry if your carving skills aren't up to par.

Those who assist here will also be given an item made of Everfrost of their choice, ranging from gemstones to be inlaid into jewelry, to an icy blade that never melts. Just remember, it is very cold, so try not to wear it anywhere it touches the skin.

Gourmet Tourism Ainosato, Sapporo
Due to the sheer cold of Sapporo's climate, the only way to travel through the city is by underground train, with only the locals brave enough to navigate the streets on foot. But the refugees are certainly welcome to try, and will even be offered snowshoes to make the trip easier.

Heading north to the Ainosato Ward, refugees will find a Beer Museum dedicated to all the brews made throughout Nippon, and including some rare international brands. Naturally, there's free samples, but do try not to get drunk until you reach the bar at the end of the guided tour. This is also the only bar in the East with a permit for selling imported Uki beer, which is almost cloyingly sweet and sure to be an acquired taste, even for those who normally enjoy Uki.

For those seeking Sapporo's signature snack as a souvenir to take back to Tokyo, they'll be sure to find no shortage of shops selling Snow White Lovers, which are said to invoke strong feelings of pure and innocent love when gifted to someone else. Which is very literal, because the gift boxes they arrive in are enchanted with a temporary love spell. At least the cookies are fine??

Nippon's Snow Level

While exploring the city is all fine and good, the real draw of Hokkaido is the sheer amount of outdoor activities visitors can do out in the snow! Naturally, winters in Hokkaido are even harsher than usual, so all refugees interested in exploring will be encouraged to take with them a special haori that can be worn over their clothes, imbued with a magi-tech heating element to keep the wearer nice and toasty.

The Ice Princess Hotel is connected to a large ski resort, and is a short distance from numerous hiking trails. But take note: the cold isn't the only threat out in the wilderness, and those without the ability to protect themselves may be joined a local Hunter Samurai just in case they get lost or encounter something dangerous.

Regardless, whether one is interested in renting some skis, sleds, or snowshoes, the ski resort is still sure to be a pleasant experience!

Crystal Tears Minami, Sapporo
Although Hokkaido is stuck in a perpetual winter, that doesn't mean nothing grows here. In fact, Hokkaido is the only place where crystalflowers can be found. As the name suggests, they're flowers with a crystal-like appearance, with jagged petals and a clear stem. And despite growing like flowers, attempting to handle the fragile petals will cause them to melt like ice.

These flowers can be found all across Hokkaido no matter the time of year, but the best place for viewing them is at the summit of the Ice Princess Ski Resort, where an elaborate garden showcasing different varieties can be found. Some grow on spiky vines like roses, while others grow straight from the ground like poppies.

But beautiful as they are, being surrounded by so many has an odd side effect. For those with an affinity for water or ice magic of any kind, be it local or from home, they may find themselves starting to cry when standing amongst the flowers. While they won't be able to understand why, they'll feel a certain sense of melancholy when looking upon them, as if reminded of someone dear they've lost in the past.

Thankfully, this effect will wear off after getting some distance from the flowers.

Remnants of a Goddess ???, Sapporo
But not everywhere in Sapporo is safe to explore. Those with a penchant for getting into danger may find themselves wandering into the eye of the storm at the very heart of Sapporo. The Everfrost is not a natural occurrence, and is in fact the result of a powerful Goddess who is said to have met her untimely demise at the hands of the people who once worshipped her. While the true history has been lost to time, there's no denying that the source of the storm pours out from a single region in Sapporo.

Although there are many signs warning visitors to keep their distance, should anyone press through the snow, they may hear the sound of someone screaming into the wind. Following it will lead them to a large chasm, with a single bridge of ice leading to a large crystal-like structure. The bridge is slippery, and the only way into the structure is to follow the winding staircase of ice that circles around the outside to an entrance at the top. The chasm is too dark to see the bottom of, so hikers best be careful not to slip and fall.

But once they reach the inside, they'll find no person waiting for them. Instead, they'll find the entire inside of the structure is carpeted with crystalflowers, and at the very center sits an absolutely massive flower, which begins to stir as if it were alive.

If the elaborate set up wasn't obvious enough: this is a boss fight.

The flower is capable of summoning icy phantoms, who take the form of beautiful young women. These phantoms will surround their opponents with cyclones of icy wind, causing a death by a thousand cuts if they aren't shattered. Only by shattering the first phantom will the flower once more return to dormancy. Attacking the flower directly is also an option, though it is far more dangerous, as the entire structure is filled with the flower's roots, capable of wrapping around opponents and stabbing them with icy thorns, sapping the heat from their bodies.

Defeating the flower will calm the storm down long enough for them to safely return to the city proper. But should they stay long enough to explore the inside of the structure, they'll find numerous riches and expensive offerings that no one is going to stop them from taking. Just don't take too long stuffing your pockets, or you'll have to fight the damn thing twice just to get out.

Icy Reflections

Just behind the Ice Princess Hotel sits a tall and imposing building within the castle complex. Believed to have once been the keep where an ancient goddess ruled over her subjects, this area isn't part of the main hotel. Instead, guests are welcome to explore the maze-like corridors on their own.

Unlike the hotel, the castle isn't heated, and the structure isn't entirely made with Everfrost. Instead, it appears as though the Everfrost simply blanketed every inch of the original wooden castle, with everyday objects and decor sometimes visible beneath the unpolished ice stone, forever frozen in time.

But for those who dare explore the highest levels of the keep comes an ominous warning: should you meet a phantom of ice, shatter it immediately, lest it assume your identity and replace you.

Mirror, Mirror Minami, Sapporo
Throughout the castle's keep, there's only one thing that hasn't been covered by the Everfrost. On each floor sits a large mirror, seemingly enshrined into the center of each room. And looking into these mirrors reveals a distorted image of oneself.

As they ascend to the higher floors, the images will become clearer, revealing the reflections to be glimpses of alternate timelines from their home worlds. Each floor will reveal more of a specific timeline, their altered reflection growing more and more detailed. And upon reaching the highest floor, looking into the mirror will cause them to trade places with this alternate version of themself.

These alternate versions are the result of a kouribake, the ice phantom ayakashi, and appear just as real as the ones they replace. They retain all memories of the original's life in Nippon, as well as any memories from the alternate timeline. However, they have a significantly lower body temperature, and their bodies will crack and shatter when injured.

But what do they want, exactly? It's hard to say. Some of the more peaceful ones will even admit to being reflections of alternate timelines, given solid form thanks to the ayakashi. But others will retain some shades of malice, intent on taking over the life of the original, and silencing anyone who finds out the truth.

Shatter Me Minami, Sapporo
Now some may be wondering why something so dangerous is open to the public. But that's just the thing: ordinarily, these ayakashi aren't dangerous at all, and their phantoms simply melt away after about an hour, freeing the original from the mirror. But things have changed. And the ice phantoms will exist indefinitely unless destroyed.

Is it Kizuna? For some reason, the locals and even the NRL don't believe that to be the case. But regardless, these phantoms need to be dealt with.

Thankfully, many phantoms can be convinced to leave peacefully. These phantoms may simply have a short list of things they want to experience or share, and will leave willingly once satisfied. It could be sharing their alternate past, finally confessing their feelings for someone they met in Nippon, indulging in sex or a specific kink, or just eating their favorite meal from home. Upon being satisfied, they will fade away until all that remains is a crystalflower.

But others will be more stubborn, and may need to be shattered entirely. Naturally, this is easier said than done when the phantoms share the face of someone you care about. These phantoms may have powerful new abilities from their respective timelines, or even ice-themed versions of their original's powers. While their bodies are constructs of ice and magic, wounds that would otherwise be fatal will still be fatal for the phantoms.

Of course, the fastest method is to simply destroy the ayakashi responsible for creating the phantoms. But by the week's end, any remaining phantoms will turn into crystalflowers, with the kouribake responsible nowhere to be found.

And perhaps the most troubling thing about all of this is that the original may receive memories of the phantom's time spent in Nippon, as well as vague memories of life in this alternate timeline. Was the alternate timeline real after all? Or was it just all an illusion conjured up by the ayakashi? Perhaps some things are better left unknown.

OOC Notes
Welcome to Jikan's January event! Please direct any questions to the Question Thread in the OOC Plotting post.
• Characters who won a trip in the TDM's ice skating contest will be upgraded to private, luxury rooms as per the contest's rewards. As there was no need to sign up for this, players who want their characters to have a fancier stay without needing to work for a day can just say they won a prize!

• As the Hi element concerns both high and low temperatures, characters who have mastered either Hi or Mizu can also be affected by the crystalflowers.

• The giant flower cannot be fully destroyed, nor will the structure melt if subjected to fire. That said, the crystalflowers can still melt, and will cause the chamber to fill with icy water if too much heat is applied.

• The treasure will not include modern day currency, but instead will include jewelry, gemstones, very old gold and silver coins, and ancient artifacts like vases, cutlery, and weapons. These can be sold in Sapporo to collectors for a high price (upwards of 500 thousand yen), or sold in Yokohama's Port Market for an extremely high price (upwards of 10 million yen). Only the weapons will not sell, as upon explaining where they were found, most collectors will presume the weapons to be cursed and will suggest they enshrine them instead.

• Ice Phantom AUs must be possible deviations from canon, but otherwise, can be as wild as you'd like. For example, you can't do an AU where Naruto is a Pokemon trainer, because Pokemon don't exist in Naruto's canon. But you can do an AU where Naruto is adopted by a canon villain and grows up evil, drastically altering his personality and past.

• AUs will still retain memories of their original's time in Nippon. Whether these memories are skewed to suit their new personality/backstory is up to you!

Kaeya Alberich | Genshin Impact

[personal profile] icepatch 2022-01-15 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Earn Your Keep

[Well, Kaeya wasn't exactly surprised that there had been a caveat to staying in a ritzier hotel at a more affordable cost. And it wouldn't be the first time had taken up a serving role ever since partnering up with Diluc back in October. Besides, it was little fun knowing that Diluc was at the bar while he manned the tables and kitchen. Despite how chilly the place was, there was a bit of a warm atmosphere around.

A hearty meal was always good for the soul, as they say.

His hair was growing up so he was able to get it into a neat ponytail for the day, which was for the best given how much running round he had to do! He set down a glass of water to the newest table he was saddled with.]

All set on what you want or should I come back later?

[He offered a honeyed smile and a hand on his hip, not even bothering to get the notepad out until he was certain he would need it. Not that he really needed to given he had the menu memorized by now.]

Crystal Tears

[Kaeya had thought the flowers were utterly gorgeous. They reminded him of Mist Flowers, in a way. But with their crystalline structure, they certainly surpassed them and he almost wished they he could see something like this back home. If anything, they'd likely be in Dragonspine with its perpetual winter. He wandered through the showcase, hands folded into the sleeves of the haori that kept him nice and toasty.

However, it wasn't long until he realized that his vision had blurred and wet warmth was tracking down his face. He stopped, startled, and reached up to wipe at his cheeks. Sure enough, there were tears and...]

Why won't it stop?

[It was a soft murmur, but his voice quivered as his brows furrowed in confusion. He continued to try and wipe the tears away from his eyes but the melancholy was settling in. It was kind of a horrible feeling, because there was really only one time he ever felt like this before and he didn't want to think about it considering what it led to. Finally, he shook his head and excused himself from his walking companion.]

Shatter Me

[The phantom that walked around looked almost exactly like Kaeya, except most of his attire was teal colored. And for those from Teyvat, a familiar teal. Because the Vision at his hip was not cryo, but anemo. Kaeya played with the plait that fell over his shoulder, a contemplative look on his face as decided to seek out any familiar faces that were also here. There wasn't much in the way of specifics he wanted... except companionship. He may be beloved in Mondstadt, but he hardly let himself get close to others given his heritage and even more mysterious upbringing by a certain anemo archon.]

How can anyone stand the constant cold? Hmph... excuse me, do you know where I can find something warm to drink?

[Because first things first, a hot drink would be a start!]

Wildcard

[I can do a different AU, along with the sweet Uki option if anyone wants any NSFW options. Let me know, otherwise hit me up if you want anything specific! mossflower#4962 <3]

[Ren had spent most of last month hiding in his apartment because of the scare with the time loop, plus he was still trying to cope with losing his boyfriend so soon. He got better once Christmas came, but still took it easy.

Because of this, and a time surge, Ren's hair had now grown to be quite long, being kept in a ponytail for now as well. He should get it cut sometime.

Luckily for Ren, he didn't any personas that used bufu equipped today so he didn't feel the effects of the flowers. He does notice Kaeya and... are those tears? He thinks for a moment to see if he should bother him when he's clearly upset but figures the worst would happen is Kaeya telling him to fuck off.

He walks over by pretending to look at the flowers before then taking out a cloth and offers it to Kaeya. Trying to play it cool so not to embarrass him furthur.]

Here. It wouldn't be good if your eyes got frozen out here.

[He doesn't know Kaeya has ice powers.]

Aether | Genshin Impact

1 | Stuck Between a Rock and a Cold Place
[A strange scene is unfolding at the hotel. In the shared living space of one of the suites, a small fairy-like girl seems to be stuck to the icy wall, as Aether presses a hand to the ice just above her, steam rising from where his palms meet the ice. Thankfully, it just looks like her clothes are stuck -- but this isn't really any more comforting to Paimon.]

It's really not melting... maybe if I heat some water and pour it down from the top, it'll let you go?

[The small girl flails at the suggestion, voice tearful. "Wait!! Don't just leave Paimon hanging here like a painting on the wall!!"]

It's okay! It's just a few feet away...

[Help?? Please??]

2 | Frosted Melancholy
[Aether had heard rumors about Hokkaido's crystalflowers, and was excited to get to see them in person! Riding the ski lift up to the top, alongside whoever else happens to be going up at the same time, he'll have a look of wonder on his face as he looks out over the landscape.]

[But upon reaching the top and looking out at the crystalline garden spread out before him, rather than a look of wonder -- he finds himself suddenly thinking of his sister, and how the first time he heard about the land where crystal flowers bloom all year round, she was the one to tell him about it. They were going to travel through this world and see it together once his soul was healed up. But now...]

[Of course, he doesn't realize these thoughts are being pressed onto him by magic. So when he feels his eyes beginning to brim with tears, he quickly steals away from the garden to try and find a place to be alone.]

3 | Boss Fight
Let me know if you get cold. I know Hi magic, so I can warm you up really fast if you need it!

[This is clearly the only explanation for why Aether isn't entirely bundled up, despite the weather. But he's dressed warmer than usual, at least. No midriff, but he's showing some leg instead. And yet he's clearly not cold at all.]

I've heard there's supposed to be some kind of cavern up ahead. I guess this area is full of a lot of ancient ruins buried under the snow... wanna check it out? If there's treasure to be found, I bet I can find it!

4 | Wildcard
[Aether can also be found: offering boxes of White Lovers cookies to any of his friends back at the Hotel, trying all the beer at the beer museum, or exploring the spooky castle behind the resort before getting sucked into a mirror!]

[I will be doing closed prompts for all AU threads, so hit me up here if you wanna do something!]

[personal profile] brilliantdiamond 2022-01-15 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
[Despite his memories telling him otherwise, Aether knew his time in this world would be brief. But what should he do with his time here? Knowing that his alternate self was still so ignorant of the horrors of Teyvat made him wonder whether writing himself a letter would be a viable option...]

[But would it really make a difference? Would he even believe it? He's not so sure...]

[But alas, his train of thought is interrupted by the sight of Morax of all people joining him near the garden of crystalflowers. Now with just a glance, someone like Zhongli will be able to immediately tell something is off: because the permanent cracks in Aether's soul are not present in this one. But he won't be letting on so quickly, offering him a half-hearted smile as he turns his gaze back to the flowers.]

What do you think of these flowers? Do you think they're pretty?

Closed to Xiao

[personal profile] brilliantdiamond 2022-01-15 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
[His time was running out.]

[Was the Kouribake's power growing weaker? Or was this simply the natural lifespan of an icy phantom? He's not sure. But it's not fair. Why does his life have to end here? Why was he even brought here to begin with, out of all the timelines that could possibly exist? Was this just another facet of the fate dealt to him by the gods?]

[There's anger in his heart as he stumbles through the snow back towards the castle where he was brought to this world. But as he feels the cracks in his legs growing deeper, he stops-- and he utters a name outloud.]

[If he has to go out like this, then at least let him go in the same manner as many of his fallen comrades in the Abyss Order--]

Xiao. Can you hear me?

Itto. You have good timing.

[Did Itto intend to come to this spooky-ass place, or did he get lost? It doesn't really matter. But either way, he arrives at the start of the icy bridge leading over the chasm just as "Aether" was about to cross it himself. While nothing about him looks to be out of the ordinary, there's a certain shift in the way he speaks and how he carries himself that may become more obvious as time goes on.]

[He gestures across the bridge and towards the large ice structure.]

Do you know what this place is? Apparently, it's supposed to be the eye of the storm, and the source of all the snow you see falling all around Hokkaido. Wanna check it out?

[personal profile] baneofallevil 2022-01-15 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
[ Without question and within mere seconds of that voice calling out to him? Xiao instantly appears, concern wrought on his face. It was somewhat rare for Aether to call his name here, but now that he was here? Something just... felt off. He couldn't really put a finger on what it was, though. ]

Aether. What's wrong?

[ He hasn't summoned his spear yet, gaze ticking from the blond to all around him for the possible source of danger. ]
brilliantdiamond: (✧099)

[personal profile] brilliantdiamond 2022-01-15 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
...huh. So it's the sound of our voice that draws you in. Can you really not tell the difference between us?

[By contrast, Aether summons his own sword immediately -- the blade appearing in an all-too-familiar burst of dark purple energy, the very same utilized by the Abyss. The eyes that look back at Xiao are cold.]

The vigilant Yaksha, conqueror of demons... it seems a fitting end for someone like me. Provided you can put up a fight.

[personal profile] oneandoni 2022-01-15 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
[it's a little bit of column a, a little of column b, why Itto is here. And by now, surely someone has convinced this idiot to wear the haori they're given as well as change his geta for a pair of boots. Oni are not built for this kind of weather - or at least, Inazuman oni aren't.

He doesn't notice anything off about Aether for now, just looks down the bridge where A CHALLENGE AWAITS]

Really? Something about a goddess, right? [he . . . half-listened to someone talking about it] Why not? May as well since we're out here, right?
baneofallevil: (pic#15214733)

[personal profile] baneofallevil 2022-01-15 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
[ The instance he gets that response, that solidified any suspicions he had about why this did seem a bit off. The way Aether said 'our' and 'us'... and the manner in which he spoke was different from the one he knew, and it had Xiao's brows drawing into a frown in seconds.

His golden hues fell to that sword, an uncomfortable sensation encircling his heart immediately. That energy... it was quite like when beings became corrupted back home by his karmic debt, and the eyes that looked at him were not at all kind. ]

...A fitting end? [ Xiao scoffed and his spear materialized into one hand. ] So you called me here to kill you.

[ Cold. This... it looked like Aether and it should be so easy to say it's not him, and yet he'd come when called. Since there'd been no reason to doubt him before. The magic that was at work here had created this, but there was something about the idea of having to kill the other that just... didn't feel right to him. ]

If you think you're a match for me... then go on and try.

A Goddess slain by her own worshippers, actually.

[He gestures for Itto follow, walking along the narrow and slippery path with zero hesitation. Non-slip shoes maybe??]

Apparently there's not much information left about her. Everything's been buried under Everfrost, as though she tried t bury the land and all her secrets along with her. It makes you wonder what sort of Goddess she really was, for her own people to turn on her like that.
brilliantdiamond: (✧038)

[personal profile] brilliantdiamond 2022-01-15 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
You want your Aether back, don't you? It seems the two of us can't exist here at the same time.

[And yet despite drawing his sword, there's no attempt to take a fighting stance or even defend himself. Does he want to force Xiao to take the first swing?]

[But he does step to the side, circling around Xiao as his eyes search him, as if looking for an opening.]

But you shouldn't underestimate me. You have no idea who you're really up against, after all.

[Aether has yet to tell much of anyone about his sister's role in the Abyss Order, after all. So Xiao has no way of knowing he's currently facing their leader -- albeit a significantly weakened version.]

[ It's very minute, but those words are enough to have the grip on his spear tighten a little. His Aether, huh? The one with kind eyes and a smile, alongside a fierce spirit that he admired when it came to every endeavor that he managed to overcome.

No. Distraction. He couldn't afford that now, taking in what he could and noting that there was no attempt to strike first. ]

...Even so. You really are quite cruel, aren't you?

[ There was no enjoyment he took in killing humans... well... okay so this was and wasn't Aether, but he still looked like him and didn't act like some berserk, empty minded beast. Maybe that was why he was finding it a bit harder to wrap his mind around the idea of being the one to kill him. ]

That's right, I don't. You may be strong enough to take me down, but many have tried over the centuries and failed.

[ From his stance to the way Xiao kept his gaze on the other, it was one that wouldn't really give one an opening. He could act at any second, but it was also clear he did not fear the other. ]

[Ahhh. To that, he smiles -- there really is a cruelty to it. But it's a bit forced, as he finds it easier to focus on chiding the foolish Yaksha who sided with the gods, than think about the ways this is paining his own heart.]

[After all -- he does have memories of Aether's time here in Nippon. And while those memories doesn't align completely with the life he's lived, knowing that these words will hurt someone who has shown him such kindness does pain him, in a way.]

[It's why he won't take the first swing. Because he can't. But perhaps he can goad Xiao into forcing him on the defensive, and at least give the illusion that this malice was sincere.]

And you have taken down countless allies of mine over the years. And yet not once have you come close to stopping the Abyss Order.

So consider this a rare opportunity to take out their leader.

[...he and Aether are gonna have to have a talk later.]

[There's a bit of a wet snort as he took the offered handkerchief, shaking his head but he did give a small grin at that. He swallowed thickly, clearing his throat.]

I'm a cyro vision holder, so I've got a higher resistance to ice. I'm sure it has its limits though.

[He pressed the cloth to his eyes, stepping away from the garden a bit did seem to also help with the sudden onslaught of tears. They finally seemed to slow down a bit and while he doesn't outright blow his nose into the handkerchief, he does press it there to keep his nose from running as he waited it out.]

I'll have this cleaned and returned to you when we get back. Thank you.

[He was also glad Ren hadn't asked what the problem was. He didn't really want to talk about it. Only a select few people knew the full story surrounding his adoptive father's death and the subsequent backlash within his relationship with Diluc and it wasn't something he wanted to revisit.]

[Itto follows along behind, a lot more carefully. He may have learned how to walk on the ice while he was messing around with those skates, but he is far from an expert]

It does make you wonder, huh . . . it's kind of weird there's no information about it though, right? You'd think there'd be tons of stories about it.

Roui wasn't entirely sure what he was expecting when it came to a vacation in a place with snow, honestly. He's still not adjusted to the idea of it being winter yet; it feels kind of like being in a dream when you know something isn't supposed to be there at that moment in time. Actually, being dragged to the Flat by Flynn that one time, being told there was a party for him, felt kind of like that, too. What was the party called again?

Nevermind.

He pushes the thought from his mind quickly. It's all too weird. And being transported to a land of eternal snow feels just as weird. But here he is anyway, along for the ride. Maybe he just had nothing better to do.

Check-in seemed simple enough. And then he's told he's required to work to earn his room. With a displeased grimace - of course he's expected to work; why didn't he expect anything else? - he accepts the proposal and asks for what seems to be open. Thankfully, there's one pretty much right within his range of skills: turning permafrost into workable materials. It's almost like jewelry making. He's not exactly in love with the idea, but it's something he knows how to do. Maybe he'll be able to get some for the Black Baron's commission back home.

Well... if he ever got back home anyway. He's sure it would make a nice addition.

Fur makes it easier to keep from feeling the cold quite as much, thankfully. But you'll still find him bundled up with his jackets and scarves. It feels cozy and it makes the whole thing seem not so bad. If you happen to peek over his shoulder while he's working, you'll see him intricately carving decorations into the edges of a plate. He's done this a hundred times before, at least. Not that he's proud of it. But it certainly shows that he's painstakingly doing his best for it.

What he doesn't notice is that someone has knocked over some of the water for freezing the ice back together, and he doesn't seem to feel it right away when his hand brushes against the water. When he puts his hand and carving tool back to the plate, the wet part touches it and, of course, freezes to him, making him drag the plate when he tries to move away. Which warrants another displeased grimace from him.

"Oh, great! Now I guess I'll have to clean both this and the table."

It's almost as bad as working while Brilla loudly gossips with his Maman. Both are largely inconvenient, and now he has to probably ask for help. Especially since adding more water only seems to be making the plate stick to him more.

"Shtain."

Nope, not pleased about this in the slightest. Someone get this thing off of him.

[ 2. Gourmet Tourism ]

A drink doesn't sound like a bad idea. He's not so sure he should try the samples along the way, and the guided tour actually couldn't be more boring to him, but the bar at the end seems like it might have been worth the wait. The imported Uki is definitely not to his liking, but he switches it quickly for another, more bitter beer, and he's satisfied. Although he'll chug his first one to get that disgustingly sweet taste out of his mouth, he'll happily nurse the next few.

Taking a beer with him as he goes on a stroll, he does happen upon the Snow White Lovers while about. He reads the lore behind it, and he can't help but roll his eyes, frowning.

"Good to know the people here are just as superstitious as back home." His voice drips with distaste at the thought. He never really appreciated everyone's beliefs and thoughts on mysticism and jinxes, especially those regarding the Mad Rook. He always took those kinds of things with the largest grain of salt he could find.

"How do people buy this..." He struggles to find a word less offensive than garbage, but somehow manages to find another one. "Nonsense."

He's absolutely sure this kind of thing doesn't work. And he's almost tempted to buy one to prove it.

Almost. There's still some slight hesitancy in disproving the obviously harmless trinket. As if maybe these things could prove to be true. But that's clearly ridiculous, isn't it?

He still picks up a box and looks it over, though. Will he or won't he? (Honestly, if left unprovoked, he won't.)

[ 3. Mirror, Mirror ]

((CW: SPOILERS for those who haven't finished the first chapter.))

As the stay goes on, the more curious Roui becomes. And so he does find himself exploring the castle. He doesn't so much as ignore the warning of these Phantoms of Ice so much as he tells himself he just won't climb that high. He has no idea what these phantoms are, or why they would assume his identity. But... Flynn did take the form of a Sahash, and Flynn's a Tsourai. If that can take a form similar to his, he figures he should avoid anything similar to the beings from the Flat that might steal his image. Superstitious as it might sound, he knows he can't deny what he saw.

The first mirror barely shows him at all. It's... blurry? No, wobbly. No, that doesn't seem to be quite it, either. He just goes on his way to the next. And with each clarity, he moves on to the next. And then, he begins to see a story unfold. Different timelines, where he dealt with the veglamb differently. He sees different versions of Brilla. Different paths he took. All lead to where he ends up in the flat. And he's brought to Tigla-Dera. Each one, it seems inescapable.

It isn't long before he's lost track of how many floors he's gone up. Each story, he finds himself drawn to see more and more. And each one, every single one, ends with his death. Flynn stabs him, right after asking for a hug. Despite each of his other self's efforts to change, it always ends the same.

Would he have died in his home timeline, too?

He shakes his head. This is all silly. Right? He finds himself struggling to convince himself. These visions seem all too real. Something has to be playing tricks on him. He tells himself as much, at least. There must be some drug he was given before coming here.

If you happen to be on the same floor as him, you'll find him visibly shaken by what he's seeing, and perhaps even muttering to himself that it's a simple trick of the light, or a drug, or whatever. There clearly has to be some logical reasoning behind this.

[Roui just got here, so he actually has no idea what's going on specifically. Just a rather small-looking human walking away from... whatever-that-is-stuck-to-the-wall as it cries out not to be left behind.

Back home at the Hill Camp, the other Sahash were always kind of paranoid of humans. And listening to the fairy-thing, he wonders if the human has done something to her and is leaving her there. Maybe that's why Sahash don't trust humans?

He's not usually one to take pity on much, but he'll try to go over to the fairy to help her. If only because he's mildly agitated at the thought that someone could be so rude to stick someone to ice and leave them there.

He'll start by gently trying to pry the clothes away from the ice, if she'll let him. Of course, to no avail. He gives a thoughtful hum before reaching a conclusion - he still has some of the workers tools from the ice workshop. He might be able to use the pick to get some of the ice away.
]

Looks like you're stuck pretty good, there. Look... [He pulls out the pick for a moment, keeping it up for her to see. He's going to try not to spook her, but he's not trying very hard.] I'm going to try to carve you out of it, okay?

[Ren didn't know what a cyro vision holder was, but he won't ask for now. Kaeya didn't seem to be in the mood for questions right now. Especially with whatever is bothering him. Better not to press on it.

He didn't say a thing until the older man spoke again.]

You're welcome. I do have more of those, but I won't say no to having it cleaned.

[He toys with a lock of his own hair. He really should get a hair cut one of these days, but he's waiting until he gets bored of having really long hair (or if another time surge took it away).]

[ Xiao wasn't the manipulative type, nor one who liked to speak more than he needed to. So he felt no need to mention anything about that somewhat forced smile that he'd seen Aether put on after what he'd said, as it was telling to the bigger picture here.

The only consolation here is that this Aether wasn't the one he knew, and he knew he wasn't part of the Abyss Order. He'd seen the blond undertake many incredible endeavors that would make most humans falter, and was not on the other side but these were all things he would speak with his own about once he was back where he belonged. ]

I had always suspected their leader was some kind of coward who could not be bothered to show his face, as otherwise I would have made an attempt to put a stop to them long before now.

[ At least this time there's an edge to his voice now, and a moment where he brings up his spear to point it's tip at Aether. Every place that bore the nearly opaque green jade was now beginning to glow as well, his eyes narrowed coldly at the other.

Like this, Xiao could pretend he wasn't bothered by the fact he was going to have to kill the blond before him. ]

I've taken down so many of your allies... and yet you haven't made an attempt to strike me down. Even now, you hesitate.

Curiosity is what draws Lucy in to explore the castle as well. She'd listened to the warning about the ice phantoms, and like Roui, told herself she wouldn't go up too high. Just a peek or two.

Until she realized what was being reflected after the first mirror or two had only shown her a reflection akin to what she might see in a funhouse mirror. As the images grew clearer, she saw a woman with her back turned, holding a pink-haired baby with horns, whose chubby face peeked over the woman's shoulder. The following mirrors showed the horned baby growing up into a child, and Lucy soon realized that the baby was herself, which meant the woman must be her mother.

Wanting to catch a glimpse of her mother's face, which she'd never seen for herself, Lucy lost track of how high she was going. But with every mirror, her mother either had her back turned, or the mirror only showed her from the neck down, never revealing her face.

Before she knew it, she had managed to encounter someone else. She had to pause for a moment as she was puzzled by his appearance. Obviously not human. Was he another refugee, or one of the native races of Nippon? He was mumbling to himself, but nothing she could pick out until she cautiously inched closer to him. She listens for a couple of seconds before finally deciding to break the silence by clearing her throat.

Diluc Ragnvindr | Genshin Impact

i. Earn Your Keep
Order up!

[A man with fiery crimson hair tied up high and away from his neck calls out and slides a glass down the bar into a patron's waiting hand. They share a nod, and Diluc picks up a dishtowel from the bar top and flips it lightly over his shoulder, collecting a few glasses from the bar and setting them back for someone from the kitchen to collect.

It was busy earlier but now, near to the end of this shift, the bar is far quieter. Diluc has been keeping people entertained at various points in the last few hours, demonstrating tricks when making cocktails and recommending beverages based on the particular personal tastes of the customers. He hasn't been wrong yet.

He leans on the bar for a minute, taking a small break between one task and the next.

Fancy taking a moment to talk?

ii. Remnants of a Goddess
[The climb up had been... taxing, at best. Diluc had not enjoyed it and the spikes he had strapped around the soles of his boots for the ascent had only barely taken the edge off the constant threat of slipping. But there does come a point where, when you have pushed your way through chill that feels like it's going to freeze the skin off your face and half a flight of stairs that make your thighs burn with the effort of maintaining your balance, that a stubborn nature wins out.

He's determined to see this through, now.

Though he isn't really here to fight, Diluc is (as always) entirely prepared to do so. He stops at the top of the flight of stairs and turns a quick glance to his companion, puffing out a sharp exhale of air that mists in front of him.
]

The next time I say something like this sounds like a good idea, remind me about those stairs. [Diluc straightens up with a grunt and rolls his shoulders, finally putting his full attention on their surroundings. Beyond the entrance at the top of the stairs, there's a...

Something that looks like a...

Diluc frowns.
]

That looks like some kind of regisvine...

iii. Shatter Me
[Exploration gets him into trouble again, naturally, but thankfully what emerges out of the castle is not a mimic of Diluc that is intent on causing harm. In fact, the mimic looks a great deal like Diluc himself, with the same pale skin and crimson eyes, but there are... differences.

His hair is still bright red, but rather than being tied back it falls down to his mid-back in thick, loose curls. Instead of a mostly black outfit his clothing choice is accented with lighter shades. But it's the general aura about the man most of all. He seems less stern, less like he feels as if he carries the weight of the world on his shoulders - something that Diluc has never quite shaken entirely even for all the progress he has made through his time in Nippon.

One thing gives him away as a phantom without a doubt. A Pyro Vision in a Mondstadt setting hangs at his hip, but the glass is coloured ice blue.

He makes his way through the Hokkaido streets, occasionally pausing to peek into shop windows. Now and then he taps someone lightly on the elbow and asks them in a bright, polite tone.
]

I'm looking for someone, do you have a moment to help me?

Roui jolts at Lucy clearing her throat. He was so lost in his albeit-panicked reverie, that he hadn't noticed anyone come onto the floor with him. He stares at her for a solid minute, first piecing together just what exactly snapped him back to the present and then to actually look at Lucy.

Just as he's about to dismiss her as a human, he notices those little horns on her head. Okay, that's different. Humans don't come with those. And he has to remind himself for the upteenth time that he's not in a familiar world anymore. He begrudgingly tells himself humans don't have horns at home. He supposes here could be different. Doesn't stop the disproving grimace from spreading acrost his features, though. More at the fact that he's not used to how things work here more than Lucy's appearance. He forces himself to make a more presentable face and gives a sigh that shows he's relieving whatever tension he may be carrying.

"Sorry, didn't see you there," he says almost tiredly; defeatedly. He ponders his next words while trying to piece together everything at once. The mirrors, the story, the infinite deaths, and then the person now in front of him that snapped him out of whatever downward spiral he was just having. It's a little much right now. And he wonders if maybe he should chance another glance at that mirror, but there's a fear that keeps him from doing so. Probably for the better, honestly.

"Uh, the mirrors..." he brings up awkwardly, clearly questioning to himself whether or not he should, whether or not he'll sound like the lunatic he's sure he does. "Are they... giving you weird things too? Like some hallucinations or something."

He's ready to change his tune at a moment's notice. Ready to brush this off as clearly insane. In fact, he quite hopes so. Someone tell him he's crazy so he doesn't have to worry about whatever the mirrors are showing him anymore. He can accept that more easily than the alternative.

[It isn't hard for Zhongli to grasp that this Aether was not necessarily the Aether he knew. The state of his soul said more than enough: There was no way for such a change to occur overnight.

Still, they felt close enough to the Aether he knew that he did not shy away. He was curious.]

I would say so. They are beautiful, but delicate. Such sights make me glad that I came here to Hokkaido, for I would not have been able to appreciate them otherwise.

[He tilts his head just slightly to the side-- to glance at Aether more closely.]

What about you?

[The question is very open ended: Was he asking what he thought of the flowers, or of being here?]

[Kaeya had his hands on his knees, catching his breath. He was thankful his knee had healed all those months ago because he was not sure how he would have made it up here with Diluc had it still been giving him trouble. It was definitely aching a little more, but that was just in general now along with how his legs just burned from all those stairs.

Good grief, why did they agree to do this?]

You can't call the Knights inefficient now after all this.

[He let out a breath and straightened, following Diluc's gaze and humming in agreement.]

It sure does, but I highly doubt it acts like one. Knowing this place.

[With a dumb flourish, Kaeya drew out his sword rather than creating the usual icy one with his Vision. He glanced over at Diluc with a smirk.]

Just like old times?
