He sang. And when one song ended he moved smoothly into another. Their audience were captivated by the two of them, standing or sitting and listening with rapt attention.
Xie Lian had no doubts that this was all because of Maglor's instrument than his singing, it was an effective tool. He wondered if Maglor would teach him how to play?]
no subject
He plays until Xie Lian seems satisfied and stops, coming over with a smile ]
You are very good - thank you for indulging me.
no subject
It was as the crowed was dispersing that Maglor joined him and Xie Lian turned with a wide, friendly smile.]
I should be thanking you! Your playing was nothing short of masterful. What is that instrument?
[It looked like instruments he was familiar with but was different enough for him to ask after it.]
no subject
But I thank you - it is good to challenge oneself from time to time!
[ And at home, Maglor has had no challenge since Daeron of Doriath ]
This? It is a harp - a lap-harp, to be specific.
[ Maglor offers it to Xie Lian to see ]
My father made it as a gift for recieving my Mastery. [ The silver harp is exquisitely carved with vines and flowers and tiny birds and beasts that look almost alive, and the string sing sweetly when touched ]

[He was both surprised and impressed as he took the offered lap-harp to inspect for himself. Xie Lian glided his fingers over the silver frame of the instrument, tracing the patterns and flowers with great interest. And then his fingers found the strings. A delicate touch brought a soft sound. Another and another and he managed to make a small, pretty little tune of nonsense. Xie Lian laughed.]
A fine instrument. You must be a force to be reckoned with on your best days.
no subject
[ He shrugs, smiling ]
I was, aye. Not for nothing did they once call me the second greatest minstrel of elvendom!
[ And not at all shy about saying so, either ]
no subject
[Since he was neither wind or water... The thought brought an odd look of sadness to Xie Lian's eyes, just for a moment, but it cleared when he smiled and offered a laugh at the boast.]
I have no problems imagining that to be true. But who was the first?
no subject
[ He assures Xie Lian with a smile ]
Dairon the dark with ferny crown
played with bewildering wizard's art
music for breaking of the heart.
Such players have there only been
thrice in all Elfinesse, I ween:
Tinfang Gelion who still the moon
enchants on summer nights of June
and kindles the pale firstling star;
and he who harps upon the far
forgotten beaches and dark shores
where western foam for ever roars
Maglor whose voice is like the sea;
and Dairon, mightiest of the three.
[ He chants it, low and sweet and then breaks off and laughs wryly ]
Daeron of Doriath was he, loremaster and harpist to King Thingol Greymantle, in the morning of the world. I have heard him sing but the once, but no other would I mark as my better, although I will admit that the writer of the Lay had a definite bias towards him.
no subject
Since I have never heard of Daeron of Doriath and he is far from this world, I believe that firmly puts you in first place now.
no subject
Oh! I shall remember you said that if ever he comes here - how he will pout! Thank you, my friend.
no subject
I'm happy that pleased you. You're welcome to remember anything I say or nothing at all.
no subject
Xie Lian, my friend, why would I not wish to recall anything you say? Ai, but if Daeron ever comes here I will introduce you. We have been rivals for as long as folk have known to compare us, is all.
[ Not friends, never that, with the slaughter of Doriath laying between them. But rivals, yes. Once, something more, perhaps, but there is too much grief between them now for things to be easy ]
no subject
His smile fell just a little, just for a moment, remembering that name. He did his best not to think of it, to think of the people he had left behind, because he was under the impression that none of them would know he had left at all. None would be worried at his vanishing. And in time he would be returned to the point where he had left. That was his hope.
And so he refused to worry about those of his world.
For now.]
I will welcome him as a friend should he ever arrive to this world.
[His smile was back, happy that he could offer this to his friend.]
no subject
[ Maglor hums, seeing that fleeting sadness but being polite enough not to mention it ]
And then we can both sing for you, and you can decide which of us is the better!
no subject
[Because Xie Lian was a loyal friend. Regardless of who was the better, Maglor was his friend.]
no subject
Oh, he will be so sulky. Thank you, Xie Lian, you are a true friend indeed!
no subject
No thanks needed, your good cheer is thanks enough! That's what friends are for.
hm, end here?
Well! I will wish hard - perhaps one day it will be granted.
