I promise, I will not hold it against you!

[ He smiles back, and waits patiently, shivering at the feeling as the glow starts ]

That feels so odd.

[To Duo's utter surprise the glow actually happened and he felt something forming within his hand. He closed his fingers around it and pulled. The light shone a little brighter as the item came free and Duo had to blink the spots from his eyes before he laughed.]

... It worked!

[ It's a lap harp that Duo pulls free, nothing so elaborate as the one Maglor normally carries around, but very definitely similar ]

That... feels so strange.

[ Maglor blinks a few times, eyes the harp, and huffs a laugh ]

Of course it's a harp.

[Duo held the harp in his hands with a look of confusion before he turned that look to Maglor, lips twitching.]

And you mocked me for my scythe? What do I do with this?

I am a bard.

[ He points out with a grin and then grimaces ]

Well. If I'm any judge... I suspect the music this thing plays will be... mm. Somewhat lethal. Maybe don't point it at anyone when you pluck a string.

[ If he does, a sword will fly out ]

[Oh now you shouldn't have told Duo that. He smirked and glanced around before turning away and pointing himself and the harp in a direction where noone but a wall stood. He was curious!

Having no skill at all with instruments, Duo didn't know if he'd need to pluck a certain one or several in sequence to get any kind of reaction, so he just... brushed his fingers across the strings, a pretty, if tuneless sound, emerged. And with it came a sword that appeared and flew straight at the wall.

Duo burst out laughing and looked down at the harp, thrilled at such a strange weapon.]

That's so impractical!

[ Maglor winces at the sword ]

Mm, it's... not unusual to what I can actually do, although it's a bit cruder. If you want to keep it... ?

[Duo missed the wince, if he had seen it he might have not gone and plucked the strings again to cause two then three swords to go flying out in quick succession.

It really was impractical as a weapon. No less impressive though. At the very least there'd be some shock factor to take into account that could afford him some time if he was faced with an enemy.]

Huh? You actually have a weapon like this? Why the hell didn't you tell me? You're an awesome guy, Mags. But I can't keep this, it's yours, remember?

Not a weapon, no. [ His voice doesn't waver, the wince well controlled by the time Duo looks around ]

But Song in my world can do many things - I may not be able to make a sword, but what I can do with the Song at need might as well be that.

Song? You're like a siren or something, Mags?

[Duo turned then and stopped playing with the harp even if it was kind of fun, he thought with some practice he could get his aim down to near pin-point accuracy.]

You're gonna have to explain that one. What's this singing thing do exactly?

What's a siren? [ He asks curiously ]

Mm, well, I'm a trained bard, which means I can not just hear the Song of the world, but ... manipulate it slightly. Ask it to help out, as it were. There's a lot you can do with Song, and in honesty most of my folk can do a little. But a bard can do... more. Almost anyone can sing a bit of virtue into a pastry, to keep the crust crisp and to warm the heart when eaten. But to raise a river or bring down a landslide, that's harder if you aren't already friends with the river and properly trained. You remember how I lit the fire? That's part of it.

Uhh... Sexy, water nymph who sits on a rock and sings sailors to their deaths? I think... Kinda like an angry mermaid.

[At least that's how he knew them, they could have been different from what he knew from movies he'd seen. But he raised his brows hearing Maglor was a bard. Had he known that? He was getting some serious D&D vibes.

Wait. Didn't bards fuck everything that moved? Duo gave his friend a curious look, wondering about that... He didn't seem like the type...]

Hell you mean 'almost anyone'? I don't think you could get me to sing a pie crust to peak crispiness! But that's kinda... cool. So you use that in a fight? How do you do it? Just sing weapons into existence or... [He waved a hand to gesture to the world round him.] Just make shit attack people?

I don't think we have those, in my world.

[ He says thoughtfully ]

Well, all my kinfolk, anyway! [ He smiles ] I don't know if humans can do it - but the dwarves certainly had skills of their own, although they don't share them with outsiders. But I can recognise a charm on a weapon as well as any, even though I am no smith myself.

[ He shrugs ]

It depends, I suppose. [ He says slowly ] Not like that, no. Nothing so... visible. But the river that ran through my brothers Maedhros and Caranthir's lands... The Gelion was always friendly to us, and until the Enemy fouled and enslaved her she aided us as best she could, whenever we asked. So yes, I could raise her to flood, at need. I've raised a fog a few times, and landslides a few, but water an d light answers to me easier than does stone.

[ He's done other things too, that he little likes to speak of, using Song to enchant minds and drag his enemy onto his blades, as well as simply breaking people's minds with Song, amongst others ]

[Duo scratched his head and looked a bit on the confused side, because he wasn't sure how else to explain a siren. In all honesty he had no idea what they technically were himself. He'd never studied myths and legends. All he knew was what was in movies or on tv, when he was able to catch things. And when he did read books he liked some of the more classic stories over fantasy.

But now he was wishing he'd actually read those books.]

Huh. And here's me using my hands like a pleb. [Duo grinned widely.] You've a fancy way of fighing, Mags! Magic and stuff, that doesn't exist in my world. It's all technology. If there ever was magic it died a long time ago.

[ Maglor chuckles ]

I don't use it as my primary means of fighting! It takes a fair bit, to ask the world to move for you, even if the local river IS very fond of your brother! I'm still mostly a swordsman, at the end of the day. And one never knows, really - I find what Men consider magic includes a lot of things that my folk don't! It's entirely possible that there's more than you think.

I've never used swords before... I got given one of those kizuna katana things, and Wufei's been showing me a bit on how to use it, but I think I'm better with guns. Or a blade.

[Or anything he could use that was quiet. Though at the same time he did like a good explosion, so it didn't always have to be quiet.]

I guess if you saw some of the things from my world you might call it magic, if you'd never seen it before... so makes sense. Goes both ways, Mags.

[ Maglor notes - Duo is... younger than he would like, in truth, but it's not as if he doesn't already know how to fight ]

That's true enough! I still don't know what a gun is, for example!

I meant knife. [Duo grinned, having a feeling his idea of a blade and Maglor's was vastly different.]

But if you wanna show me what you've got sometime, I promise to be impressed.

[Because lets face it, Duo loved watching Wufei going through is forms and practicing with his sword, there was something so elegant about it. Much more than with a gun.]

[ Maglor chuckles ]

And what makes you think I don't know how to use knives too, hm? Although I'll grant it's not my weapon of choice, but my youngest brothers - the twins - one of them used knives.

[Duo grinned then and held up his hands, laughing while shaking his head.]

Wouldn't wanna get in the way. But thanks anyway, Mags!

I'm old enough to be familiar with most bladed weapons. [ Maglor laughs ]

Especially those my brothers favoured - halberd, sword, knives, axe, lance... I used to be a reasonable shot with the bow, too, although my hands don't really allow that, any longer.

[ he grins at Duo ] Well, the offer remains on the table.

Well excuse me for being young and inexperienced!

[And wasn't that weird to think. Given his training he was proficient in a great many weapons. Just none of those old schooly things. When the hell would he ever need an axe other than to chop down a tree?]

Live as long as I do, and I'm sure you'd learn far more.

Mags, I'm surprised I've lived as long as I have. Kinda been livin on borrowed time as is. Didn't think I'd ever get this close to my 20s.

[Truthfully he'd honestly believed he would die in the war, that he'd never see a single day of the peacetime they so desperately fought for. And he knew the others felt the same.]

Think the chances of living as long as you is near impossible!

[He was just a normal human guy after all. Nothing special or magical about him.]

[ Something like grief crosses his face ]

You deserve to live a very long time, Duo.

[ He'd give him eternity in his place, if he could ]
