tiny baby elf, come getcher tiny baby elf
⌛ Who: Maglor & whoever
⌛ What: De-Aging Curse! De-Aging Curse!
⌛ When: some random time through October
⌛ Where: all over I guess???
⌛ Warnings: Teeth rottingly cute baby elf who doubles as a fire siren
A: Tiny Baby is Actually Fire Siren
There's a hiccuping sob, and then a wail. The longer ignored, the louder it gets, until the very windows are trembling in their panes. The source? There's a tiny child sitting on the ground, swimming in robes that are... gosh, those look a lot like Maglor's, don't they?
B: Baby Elf Is Curious
"'Scuse me." A little voice pipes up curiously, from somewhere down around people's feet. "What doing?"
There's a little child, perhaps no more than three or four, although he speaks very well for his apparent age, blinking up with silver-lit eyes.
C: Baby Elf is already musical, his parents thought it was cute. At First.
It's the very earliest part of the morning, when the sun is only just a suggestion on the horizon, when birdsong comes through the window. Very loud, very close birdsong. Strange, there's no birds that sound like that? The sound, the longer one listens, is actually closer to someone... singing...? Ah... that's because there's a tiny little child sitting in the tree, having a duet with the birds.

"There once was a man known as the Ancient Monk of Mount Changming," Baiyi begins. He tells his own story of how he earned his reputation with martial arts, his close friendship with a man named Changqing, and lastly his ascension to immortality. He tells it all like a fairytale though and never makes it clear that the story is real or connected to him in any way.
"When you're old enough, you should work hard with the sword and learn everything you can from your master."
no subject
"But.... Kano wants to learn music?" He tips his head at the end.
no subject
Whoever this boy belonged to hopefully would raise him well. Baiyi has learned since coming here that not everyone has the same values and knowledge, but these were the basic that every young hero in the martial arts community should know. It seems universal to him.

"Can Kano be a gentleman if Kano is already a prince?"
no subject
It didn't seem wise at all to let a young boy like this, especially someone important like a prince, be out by himself. He'll keep that judgment to himself though. There's no reason to worry this precious child.
"What kingdom are you a prince of?"
no subject
"Uh huh! Kano's older brother is the bestest brother!"
He considers the next question. "Um. Kano's not sure? Grandpa Finwe is king, so Grandpa's kingdom?"
TL: DR whoops
"Hmm, well Grandpa's kingdom is lucky to have you." He'd like to ask more questions about this kingdom, but he decides the boy might not know. He doesn't want to risk the child getting frustrated or embarrassed if he doesn't know an answer. Something about the boy's sweet disposition makes Baiyi predict this in his behavior- either that or the old man is projecting from what he knew of the last boy who sat in his lap like this.
It feels like a lifetime ago.
"A close friend of mine had a son who was not that much younger than you when I first met him, Rong Xu. I accepted Xu'er later as a disciple when he was old enough. He was a smart boy like you are and a warm heart. He had a dream of building a sect of warriors who would share their love of martial arts and their knowledge of the world." If only Xu's dream had ended there- to what others were willing to share and not being forced to give their secrets. That lust for knowledge had stimulated another man's greed.. and his beloved disciple's fate was sealed.
"He was the very best among the mortals and was able to enjoy his dream for a while. Which is much more than many get to have in this world. When he was still young like you, he also liked getting up before the sun. We would go outside in the snow-covered mountain we lived in and watched as the world seemed to catch fire with the sunrise. The colors would be so bright against those tiny shards of ice, one couldn't gaze directly at it for long." Those mornings didn't last long. All too soon, Rong Xu had other things that held his interest.

"Rong Xu sounds very nice." He decides (he mimics Baiyi's pronunciation with careful - and perfect - diction).
"Kano would have liked to meet him! Kano doesn't know any warriors - what is that?"
no subject
"That's very good," Baiyi remarks encouragingly as the child perfects his disciple's name. "You are very talented with sound aren't you?"
His smile turns a bit sad at the eagerness to meet someone who is long since dead, but the child doesn't need to know this fact. "It would be impossible other places, but you never know in this strange world. He might show up some day."
"You're unfamiliar with warriors?"
no subject
He beams "People say that about Kano lots! Kano listens very careful."
He looks up at Baiyi and hugs him. "Don'ts be sad. Kano is sure yous can see him again."
"Kano doesn't know that word. Is like a guard?"
no subject
The hug is sweet and it earns the dear boy one in return. The man feels like something hard and old around his heart is beginning to crack thanks to this child.
"How about I tell you and fix your hair properly?" A gentleman should have his hair drawn up and Baiyi has now had a bit of experience braiding thanks to Xie. "A warrior is like a guard, yes. Guards usually protect a certain place or a person and warriors don't have to. They're honorable and uphold justice. They are important to the world to maintain order and peace for everyone."
no subject
"Kano wants to sing for e'rrybody!"
He snuggles in close.
"Yes please!" Family are supposed to do your hair, but this man is nice, so surely it will be fine.
"Ohhhh." He nods. "Kano knows some of grandpa's guards, but Kano doesn't know if there are warriors too. Maybe!"
no subject
As they get comfortable, Baiyi gently draws the boy's hair back and takes a silver comb from his pocket. "Do you have a favorite song or one this Neylo enjoys best?"
no subject
"Kano likes aaaaaaaaaaaaall the songs!" He says seriously. "But Kano's favourite is Amme's lullaby! Atto wrotes it for her!"
He promptly opens his mouth and... what comes out is ridiculously good for a kid.
"You and me--we know that land
And often have been there
In the long old days, old nursery days,
A dark child and a fair.
Was it down the paths of firelight dreams
In winter cold and white,
Or in the blue-spun twilit hours
Of little early tucked-up beds
In drowsy summer night,
That You and I got lost in Sleep
And met each other there--
Your dark hair on your white nightgown,
And mine was tangled fair?"

Kano is near the end of the song before he can bring his hands to move. He's very gentle as he strokes the comb through baby elf threads.
"Is there another?"
no subject
"Kano knows lots! Um um um... this one Kano's music teacher taught him this one! It's for dancing!
O the hoot! O the hoot!
How he trillups on his flute!
O the hoot of Tinfang Warble!
Dancing all alone,
Hopping on a stone,
Flitting like a fawn,
In the twilight on the lawn,
And his name is Tinfang Warble!
The first star has shown
And its lamp is blown
to a flame of flickering blue.
He pipes not to me,
He pipes not to thee,
He whistles for none of you.
His music is his own,
The tunes of Tinfang Warble! "
