He agreed to it and hadn't thought of it Now he was thinking of it. Did he mean to take Huaisang to the same place where his life changed forever? He chose to take Huaisang to the tea house where he wanted to bring his two interested people together. It was a bit of a test: part of it, he needed to be certain without a doubt that Huaisang didn't remember any of it. And if that was the case, he could move on, right?
Cheng doesn't think he could, though, but he wants to try.
So meeting up at the entrance of the tea house, Cheng was still psyching himself up for this meeting. He hadn't seen Huaisang since he was thrown out of the Unclean Realm. Okay, that was a bit harsh. He was doing his best to keep an open mind. Hell, he didn't even know when Huaisang came from. He needed to find that out, maybe reveal that they were a thing here in Nippon and maybe he can move on from there. He still didn't know if he was going to tell Huaisang what had happened here. Maybe it was better that he kept that a secret. He could keep secrets. It was a lot easier when he didn't know about them.
And seeing him? Cheng stilled, staring at Huaisang for a long time-too long, actually. He tried to cover it with a smile and a salute. "Nie Zongzhu. It is nice to see you again."

Kinn double-checked his list again. He discussed it with Waisu who indulged him. The old man didn't think any harm would come from it. Well, be as that may, he still ensured that the bone setter was close by considering his other close healer was... no longer on Nippon.
He and Porsche sat across from each other at the small table in their quarters, staring at each other. There was a carafe of whisky, a glass, and then a vial of the uki that Kinn had obtained. Kinn poured a measure of the drug out into the glass and left the rest stoppered so that he could give it to Silvio for a sniff test. He himself wafted the glass under his nose, trying to detect the odor. He passed the glass to Porsche to see if he could detect anything, too. Sighing through his nose, he added whisky to the glass and swirled it lazily.
"Ready?" They both had better be ready. Because it was happening. They needed to know how this affected a person and if there was any way to fight the effects.
His arm was finally free! It stank like a water-bloated corpse but free! Once he had gotten home, Kinn was already washing the skin, trying to find the most scented thing in the hotel to do so. That was one thing he couldn't abide by and that was the fact the muscle atrophied--he was going to have a time getting it back into shape is his left hand but he was willing to get it done. Once dried and a shirt back on him, he eyed the few items in his room with his eyes zeroing on two items set next to each other on the one dresser: his magnum and the violin case. Picking up one, he chooses to head out, messaging his family where he would be. Kinn heads over to the coffee shop in Port Market, a little excited to enjoy the fresh air even if he was half frozen. The weight off his arm felt wonderful and part of him was puzzled over the fact that if he was lifting a cast on his arm, why would his muscles be sore and unused? Setting up at a table inside where it was warmer and with a fresh au lait on a saucer, he pulls the violin out to check the body, tune a few strings, and Rosen the bow. Moments later, he was playing This piece, humming the bits that weren't directly from the violin. It was good to be able to do this but his arm tired so easily! He could only hold it up for a few minutes at a time; just long enough for a song before he needed to set it down and drink some coffee and people-watch.
Part of Kinn's duties here was to keep his relationship with Vegas in good standing. With his arm freed from the cast, he decided that on one particularly brisk day that he and Vegas needed to go bond and have a meal together, just the two of them with no need to keep up any pretenses.
He decided on Lotus and Peony. The soup had been excellent and fitted with a spice that reminded him of home.
Layered up in winter clothes, he breathed into the fur collar of his coat, glancing over to Vegas.
"You're going to love this soup. Actually, anything here is delicious. And it'll keep us warm on the trip home, too."
Riley knew he needed to travel to where the real cold was to go ice skating but he didn't mind that. It was fun and something he always loved doing. And after his time spent with learning about the future and getting stronger? He really wanted to enjoy the winter because suddenly he understood why he always felt so much a part of it.
Of course he wasn't expecting to see Wanyin there. Skating over, he smiled brightly as he came to a stop at the edge where he could see him putting the skates on.
"Wanyin! Are you going to skate too? Do you want to with me?"
He heard the familiar voice and looked up. It was always nice to see Riley hale and whole and not looking like he was dead in his bed like he had been earlier.
"Riley! It's good to see you." He hadn't expected to see the young man and truth be told, he was happy that the other was here. "Yes, I was planning to. I had tried it last winter and it was nice."
The invitation had Cheng smiling bashfully. "I would like that, thank you. I found it isn't too different from maneuvering a sword but I did not get much practice before spring returned." Case in point, he stood up carefully and had to adjust his balance before he felt confident enough to walk with the skates on.
"Well then I'll help you out. You can count on me!"
He gave the man a salute then went closer to the edge so he could hold his hand out for him. While he wasn't at all strong, he wasn't really weak either. That was something that he'd learned during his little coma. The one he'd taken a few days before their first date together. One of many to follow, he hoped.
"I'm really good at it so I can teach you some tricks."
"Oh? We're into trickery now?" For him in his time, Tricky Things meant something different for Cheng. But he was content to be playful about it. The whole concept of dating these two Fae -both together and separately- was still a wholly alien thing for Cheng. This sort of thing never happened (as far as he could tell, being gentry) in his own world!
He took Riley's hand, noting how much smaller and slender it was compared to his callused one, and used most of his own strength to haul himself up. A small smile graced his face; the one used for public outings and addressing the masses. His carefree one was not for the public eyes. "Show me what you're good at, Riley." Double innuendo? Cheng would never confess!
The question just made Riley laugh since he had a feeling that Wanyin had no idea that the Fae were widely known for their trickery. Which was fine because he'd never consider himself a tricky person anyway. Instead, he held onto that hand as he helped to guide the man out onto the ice with him, face lighting up at the words.
"I'd love to. But let's stick to ice skating for now." He could play a long with it too!
For now though, he just helped to get the man moving on the ice, guiding him through how to stay balanced and how to keep moving forward. "It's pretty easy once you get the feel for it. A lot of it is just letting yourself have the confidence to keep moving forward."
That pulled a broad grin from Cheng as he let Riley explain the mechanics of ice skating. He knew enough to not fall down so easily but having it explained like this helped him even more. He nodded with a hum of agreement, moving this way and that on the ice, still having a bit of a wobbly moment when he stopped. "The problem I have is turning. Stopping sometimes, too. But it is not too different with a sword in the air."
He dipped his head in acknowledgement for something else. "And...there is a time limit to learn and perfect this skill. The ice is here for only so long."
Skating ahead of Wanyin, Riley took his other hand too. He had to skate backwards to do this but that didn't bother him because it would be easier to help him with instructing on turns. "Stopping can be tricky until you get used to it. I usually suggest letting yourself slow as you gently turn until you get better balance to use the front of the skates."
Watching Wanyin's feet, he smiled then instructed him on how to make an upcoming turn, nodding as he watched the man get it. "You can fly on a sword though? How do you do that?"
It may be a learning curve but it was a short one. Cheng was familiar with balance and it was only a little adjustment to shift his balance and center. It was getting easier to turn and stop though, so he was pleased with that.
"It is a Cultivation technique. I explained it once that it is a form of magic that is formed by one's spiritual energy. With that energy, we can commune with the dead or other spirits and use it to heal ourselves and to maneuver the sword which is to fly on them. But ultimately, the goal of a Cultivator is to achieve ultimate wisdom and serenity."
"Wow. That's amazing." He really meant it too. It was like they were the protectors of the world. Kind of something he wished the Fae were. Protectors of the world rather than having their own agenda and hurting humans for the fun of it. Riley was quiet a moment as he thought about all of that.
"You know, Fae are a part of nature. Embodiments of it from my understanding. Their purpose it to protect the natural balance of the world and to make sure that things progress as they're meant to. They're not like that these days but I think it would be amazing if they could be that way again. They have so much power and magic..."
He sighed softly. "I found out recently I'm the Fae of Winter. Winter is my realm and my powers are so close tied to it because of that. It's a season that can be so scary and deadly for many but then look around at where we're at now. Look at what we're doing together. Wouldn't it be nice if we could all find the beauty like what we're surrounded in now?"
"It would be nice," Cheng agreed softly. How nice would it be to have such peace and tranquility! "I have also learned that humans abhor peace and balance, even if they claim that's what they desire most."
"Any season can be terrifying. For people who are familiar with cold, the heat can be terrifying. Trying to begin crops and harvest them is filled with the fear that nothing will flourish, or everything will rot. I do not think it is a particular season or temperature that is more frightening over the others, but what people don't understand."
And that's a big thing for Cheng to admit. "There are still many things I don't understand. And I've found that my own fear of things I don't understand has caused too much pain and devastation to the people around me. I hope I can lessen that, learn from my mistakes."
Admitting to mistakes was never easy but Riley could tell just from the brief time knowing Wanyin that it had to be really hard for him. To hear him admit that to him and say that he wanted to learn from it? It brought a smile to the Fae's face. Because wanting to grow and change was always the first step to make it happen.
Guiding them into a little twirl, he made sure it was controlled enough so the man wouldn't lose his balance, tilting his head back while he enjoyed the rush of air. It blew his hair in front of his face for a moment but that didn't bother him. Looking back at the man again, it was half in front of his face yet he was still grinning.
"That's really brave. I think that makes you one of the bravest people I know to acknowledge your fear and to want to grow from it. Not everyone is capable of that. It makes me really happy I get to know this you that you want to be."
He doesn't know how he's managed to handle this so far! He's not talking about the ice skating either. That part was easy and a simple shift of weight and balance. The praise? That was harder to take.
"I just don't want to be hurt again or put myself or anyone else in that position." He didn't want to be a bed warmer. He wanted to be a partner. And Jiang Cheng was fully aware he wasn't an easy person to get along with and everyone who had been close to him validated that with their actions.
Looking around them, he felt okay enough that he could lean in closer, squeezing Riley's hands in the process. "Can I ask you for a hug?" He doesn't, usually. CHeng prefers keeping a certain length of distance between himself and others but right now, he needed some contact. And it had nothing to do with the cold.
Didn't want to be hurt again. Boy was that a feeling he understood after all the pain he'd been through. But then Wanyin was leaning closer so he slowed them down to better be able to get closer to listen to what he had to say.
And what he heard brought a soft smile to Riley's face.
"You can ask me for hugs or kisses anytime you want them." Slowing them down more until they were at a stop, Riley moved closer and wrapped his arms around Wanyin to give him a big hug. With the man being almost a head taller than him it was easy to tuck right in there and make sure that he gave him the warmest affection possible, making sure it lasted rather than pulling away immediately.
The one temple that highlighted Buddha, Kinn traveled over to the Western Kingdom, following the address Vegas had given him. After Riley finally woke up, he felt he needed to come here-even though this seemed more like Porsche's deal, not his.
It was important to establish a presence here, anyway. Porsche wanted a real wedding. This was just the first step to give Porsche what he wanted.
They were on ice, balancing on blades of metal, embracing. When he heard Riley, he just folded around the smaller man even more, using as much of his whole body as he could in that hug. And Riley wasn't pulling away, which helped Cheng relax even more in the small increments he did-still waiting for the other to declare that was enough.
But it never came.
The sigh was almost a whimper at that point and Cheng didn't know however much time had passed when he finally put some space between them. "Thank you." He sounded a little froggy, but he didn't look like he was going to break down anytime soon. "It has been...it's been too lond since I've been able to do that."
Riley didn't move. Not even a little bit. Instead he waited for Wanyin to let him know when he was ready for them to part. At the words though, he brought his hands up and cupped his face. Though he was on ice, he had no problems going on his toes to bring his lips up to press a kiss to the man's forehead.
"I'll hug you and kiss you whenever you need it. Even if we're not together you can call me and I'll come over. You don't have to be alone anymore and you don't have to miss warmth from others anymore either." Lowering back down, Riley gave him a soft look.
"Not so long ago there were people here who hurt me really badly by playing with my heart and those who loved me gave me warmth to heal. So you can have my warmth now to heal in whatever way you need, okay? I promise."
It's several hours after Riley doesn't wake up before Will sends a video message to Jiang Cheng. Everyone else who needed to know what was happening lived in the hotel so... that really only left Wanyin.
On the screen, Will's face is pale and drawn. There's worry etched deep in his features and his eyes look so very old. In spite of that his eyes were bright like he's been crying? It's hard to tell in the sepia tones of the device's video feature.
"Wanyin," his voice was low and hoarse. "I'm afraid I have to postpone our date. Riley's..." He broke off, looking off-screen then back again. "Something's wrong with Riley."
Oh. Oh, Riley had such a similar past to him. It twisted his heart, not understanding why someone could be cruel to a person this sweet. Tears threatened to spill over his lashes but Cheng blinked rapidly, drawing in a deep breath.
"We should go sit. I have to tell you something." Because how else was he going to warn someone that he was as damaged as he could be? Once Cheng was off his feet and seated, he gave Riley a sad look. He was convinced that after confessing this-his past- Riley and by default, Will, would want nothing to do with him.
"I... have not had good experiences here," he said slowly and quietly, staring at his hands that were clutched between his knees. "Back home, it was expected of me to follow my advisors with a match and produce heirs so that the bloodline for Yunmeng Jiang could continue. I... couldn't. In my youth, it was so pressed that I made a list of demands no one could meet so I wouldn't have to deal with matchmaking. And... as time passed I supposed that was a shield of mine. I didn't feel warm to anyone who wanted to get close to me and eventually I decided that no one should.
"Coming here was a shock. The world back home is in upheaval. Nothing will be the same, and here...it was alien. My first time was with someone I knew from home. We used to be classmates, now colleagues. I admired him greatly for his patience in avenging the death of his family. It was something I could never accomplish. And I got into trouble with one of the festivals this place held. I didn't know what Uki was, or what it was capable of doing. I ingested some of it, he found me and declared he could help me out." Cheng took in a shaky breath.
"I...didn't understand. I thought he wanted me. I thought that his words of 'maybe I just want to know what your dick tasted like' was some sort of...tease? I... fell. He offered me a home, which no one had done. And I thought I was happy. But things started to change. When I was concerned about something, or worried that I was doing something wrong, it was dismissed. We didn't just do things like this...dated." He tried the modern word, pausing and then deciding he had used it properly. "When Wen Qing arrived, she had been caught in a curse and I offered to help. I didn't want it to go as far as it did. But I had liked her before she died, and was thinking that something was wrong with me because there were now two people I liked and wanted.
"When I started to give myself distance, it was Huaisang who worried, suddenly telling me things that I wanted to hear from him. Words of love and adoration that I had given him freely. And I wanted something like what you and Will have. But I wanted it with both of them.
"A-Qing didn't seem keen on the idea. And A-Sang? Well. He threw me away. He said that I could have given my body to anyone and everyone, but my heart was his and he wasn't going to share that so he wouldn't fight for me at all."
That knowledge still hurt Cheng. "I didn't want to believe that all I was good for was how well I fucked. But there it was. And then he left Nippon. And I got sick-almost died."
Jiang Cheng hadn't been expecting a message. When he does see it, his face blossoms into surprise, then concern.
"What do you need from me? What can I bring?"
Yes, he may not have known them long, but he knows the Theerapanyakuls' and he was able to form a friendship with them. He wasn't going to be a fair-weather friend.
