Open Catch-All (TDM Prompts)

I. Starry Night - Pond

Times like this were peaceful for him. When he could stand at the edge of a pond like this and see the stars in the sky as well as the reflection of the water. It reminded him so much of quieter times before everything had changed in his life. When he was just the Night Immortal with his Dream Beast at his side. Before all the pain and suffering...so much caused by his own hand.

Embracing his element, he stepped forth onto the water, walking across the surface with only soft ripples following. Soon the dragon was several feet away from the shore and just looking up at the sky above him. He smiled softly as he did, a breeze softly stirring his hair.

Hearing someone behind him, he looked over his shoulder to see who had joined him.

II. Starry Night - Daytime Stalls

Curious about the stalls that appeared for the meteor shower, Runyu visited them during the day. The food looked good but he wasn't hungry and ignored it for the most part. The trinkets though? These had his attention. Little toys and hair pins and other accessories. He couldn't help but to smile as he looked them over, sometimes picking them up to inspect them before setting them aside.

It was like he was looking for just the right thing. Which was honestly true. He was looking for little gifts for his loved ones. Something special to give to them. They never asked for that but it still felt like something he wanted to do all the same.

Lifting up a pin, he hummed softly then looked at the person next to him. "What do you think?"

III. Starry Night - Meteor Shower

Once all the lights were out, he moved to where he could have a good view of the sky. The shower was stunning, much like the ones he would provide the Mortal Realm in the past. It brought a smile to his lips to watch it happen. "...beautiful."

Near him he heard whispers of which on the rainbow tails. For a second he considered it then shook is head as he looked to the sky again. There was nothing he wanted to wish for. Nothing that he felt he could deserve to wish for. It was better that all that remained in his own world. Unless he wanted to wish for Xufeng's happiness which he already knew his brother would have in the end with Jinmi and those beautiful children.

So, he was just content to watch instead. "I wonder who controls the night sky here..."

"Ah, yes," she nodded. It was a question that was expected. Though he didn't usually divulge a great deal of information to outsiders, there was no one here who could harm them.

"Our clan's Keeper is dedicated to the preservation of ancient elven lore. This makes them a mentor and a leader of the clan in both a spiritual and literal sense. Does that answer your question?"

"Yes. Thank you. I've heard of things like this before so I can understand the importance of your Keeper. Though I imagine it's unusual for a Keeper to be on a human council. Is that correct?"

He imagined so given how the Dalish seemed to be the sort to avoid human affairs for some reason. He wasn't sure why yet but he supposed if he had some clarification it would help in his understanding.

"That's correct," she affirmed, pausing to sip her tea. It's been a while since she's been able to chat with anyone and it's nice to be able to reminisce about her clan. Once she got to know her comrades-turned-friends in the Inquisition better, she was more willing to open up to them.

There was a certain wariness she had for humans. But, Runyu's hardly human. He's a dragon! And not from her world.

"My clan were involved in several human machinations that led them into danger. They were blamed for a plague that struck a city-state called Wycome. The water supply had been poisoned, which was the source of the sickness. The original ruling class of the city fled after the elves were exonerated and those who remained elected to have our Keeper add her wisdom to their ruling council." She paused again, he expression darkening. "It is rare for humans and elves to cooperate in such ways. There are places where we're still taken as slaves."

"Slaves..."

He could fully understand why these two races kept apart now. He'd even seen similar things happen between Demons and Immortals. It was certainly worse after his own crimes but this conversation wasn't about him. So Runyu focused on her own words instead.

"May I ask what motivated her to join this council given the strife between humans and the Dalish?"

"When the corrupt leadership left, there were few remaining who understood how to lead others. Along with some local volunteers, Keeper Istimaethoriel stepped up to help so the place wouldn't fall into chaos. Those on the council welcomed her knowledge and she realized that we could help each other through such alliances." Atheva smiled fondly. "Though we avoided interactions with humans, we do not harbor any hatred for them."

Runyu nodded in understanding. It was much the way the Flower Realm used to be. Before they locked themselves away completely after what he did to them. He couldn't fault them for that though. He was more than aware of the depths of his crimes against them. "So the council was meant to heal and prevent chaos from falling upon everyone."

She nodded. "That's right. The people who remained saw how the elves tried to help them and trust grew between our peoples." She takes another drink of the tea and looks nostalgic. "I wonder if my husband would be willing to settle there after our work is done."

"Among your people? You could always ask him." He knew little about the man so he could hardly speak for him. However, he had learned through a great many errors the importance of asking others for what they wanted. To learn to compromise. Especially if there was love between the two.

"At the very least, I'm sure he would agree to an extended visit. He wants to meet my clan as dearly as I wish to meet his siblings." They would probably find some compromise. If Cullen didn't wish to return to Ferelden, they could always settle elsewhere. But it could be years before their work with the Inquisition is complete. "There's time to consider our options."

She pauses, realizing with some embarrassment that she's been dominating the conversation. "May I ask, do dragons have anything like marriage?"

"They do. I was almost married before." Twice. Both times his wedding was ruined. And he knew that he would never marry Jinmi now so it hardly mattered anyway. As for his lovers now? Well, he supposed he could ask them if they ever wanted to marry him but that was something for a future consideration rather than this conversation now.

"I am what is known as an Immortal. So we do get married. I've known many a married Immortal."

It doesn't surprise her to learn he's Immortal. However, it does beg the question: "Are all Immortals dragons?"

She's very curious by nature (half the reason her Keeper chose her to observe human affairs in the first place). She pointedly doesn't ask why he was almost married, assuming it might be a sore subject for him since he didn't elaborate further.

"They will not start that way. We begin our lives as Fairies and can, with enough devotion and training, become Immortals. It can take hundreds or years at times and Immortality can also be granted to us by the Emperor. So it's perhaps best to say that all dragons eventually become one if they are not already."

This was an easier topic for him to discuss. To explain these matters. Far better than his failings in his long life. His numerous crimes.

She's fascinated by his description of things. It seems very different from what she was taught to believe (and now knows to question).

"And are these Immortals gods?"

"Mortals will likely view us as such. We do take charge of aspects of nature to ensure that the world around mortals is run smoothly. Though I'm not sure if we truly are such a thing when we can also be bound by the same pains of the mortal world."

And sometimes made worse by their very long lives. Something he knew so well himself.

"Mm," he hummed with a slight nod. She could easily see how such beings as the Immortals Runyu described could be considered gods.

"It wasn't long before my arrival here that I learned what I thought had been Gods were merely powerful beings who enslaved the rest of the elves to maintain their power. THe Evanuris, our Creators, were merely power-hungry. It was... difficult to absorb."

"Having all that you know shaken in such a way is never easy. My own reality had that happen hundreds of years ago. Even now there are times where I still feel the impact of it."

Five hundred years should have been enough to recover but he could say from personal experience that it wasn't. Not from everything he'd learned about his mother. Everything he'd found out had been done to her. To him. It had been a harsh discovery and there were some days he just wanted to cry all over again thinking about it.

"Mm," she nodded, taking a sip of tea. "A man I once called an ally, a friend, told me this truth. He knew of it because he is the one who tried to free our people. But in doing so, it cost us the immortality we once had." She looked into her cup and then shook her head. "I don't think we were immortal in the same sense that you are."

"Perhaps not. But...and you do not have to answer if you do not wish to...why is he no longer ally or friend?" Something must have happened. Something terrible...

She pauses a moment. Solas had been a close friend and confidant. They bonded over his extensive knowledge of magic and elven history (which seemed so different from what the Dalish elves learned).

"He wishes to tear down the Veil that separates the physical world from the spiritual one. It would destroy the world as it now is."

"I see. So what he want to do in order to save the world as he sees it would bring about destruction instead." He sighed softly. That would complicate matters immensely. And force her into a position she didn't want to be in. "Now you have no choice."

"I fought to save my world once. I'm more than willing to do it again." Of that, she's determined. It may not be perfect, but she can't just let Solas essentially kill everyone who currently exists.

"You are very courageous. I admire you for that. For what it is worth, and having only heard your side of things, I support your efforts." He would like to offer help even. However, he knew that their worlds were not the same at all. There was likely nothing more that he could do than what he had already. An offer of support for her efforts.

"Forgive me," she offered an apologetic smile. "I didn't mean to turn the conversation so dark."

He offered her a smile in return and shook his head. "You have nothing to apologize for. You were honest in your answers and I appreciate that. Thank you."

"There is no reason to hide anything here. The secrets and machinations of my world mean little in this place." She softens a little, looking from her cup to the dragon. "It's somewhat of a relief to be in a place where the fate of the world does no rest on my shoulders."
